From the Dominican Republic

A few weeks back I was with Dr. Roy Hammond and a large group of our Crown Council members in the Dominican Republic and had the opportunity to use the portable Aribex unit. It was fabulous. Dr. Jeff Gray who was with us even did a series of root canals. It was awesome!

Dr. Roy Hammond uses a NOMAD to take an x-ray in a Dominican Republic clinic.

Our mission was in Villa Altagracia, 40 km NW of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. We set up a clinic in an emptied school compound with 12 physicians, five nurses, three physical therapists, on occupational therapist and five dentists. In the dental clinic, we saw 350 patients in the 4-1/2 days. We had ADEC portable dental units and a locally obtained air compressor so we were able to do restorative dentistry as well as extractions and prophies.

In the past, without x-ray capability, we often spent time trying to determine whether a deep carious tooth could be saved and restored, only to find it had to be extracted. This is where the NOMAD was a real help. We could tell the patient up front that the nerve was involved and the tooth would have to have either endodontia or exodontia. They understood because they could see it on the laptop! Having this knowledge in the beginning was such a blessing and allowed us to better treat our patients and to see more people. The unit was also helpful in planning ahead of time for a tough extraction case.
